Linking to Articles in the Miller Library's Databases    Library Home | Site Map | Contact Us

Databases that maintain persistent URLs (PURLs) can be saved to course reading lists in Blackboard or on other web documents. In order to create these links you need two pieces of information (1) The library proxy URL prefix & (2) The stable URL of the article.
The Library Proxy URL Prefix
This prefix must precede any web link created to any article in the Library's paid databases.
If the proxy is not used, the link will work only on the campus network. The Proxy Prefix is
http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=

Stable URL of the article
Stable URLs are not provided by every database. Below are instructions and examples from the databases that do allow deep article linking. Please note that there are different ways to determine the permanent link, depending upon the resource. If you have trouble determining the link, contact the  Reference Team. Those databases that allow linking in some way are
  • EBSCO databases (ERIC, History Reference Center, Professional Development Collection, PsycArticles & SPORTDiscus)
  • Gale Databases (Expanded Academic ASAP, Contemporary Authors)
  • Proquest
  • LexisNexis databases (No PURL, but you create a  Search URL that students can run)

EXAMPLES (Identify articles and URLs while on campus to insure accurate links)

EBSCO Article Linking (ERIC, History Reference Center, Professional Development Collection, PsycArticles & SPORTDiscus)

  1. While on campus, go to the database and find the article you want to link. (Use an on-campus computer to insure an accurate link.)
  2. Click on the title of the article to view the abstract
  3. Do not view the PDF of the article.
  4. Towards the bottom of the citation there will be a URL listed at "Persistent link to this record"
  5. Highlight, Copy and Paste this link as is. It already has the Library's Proxy Prefix embedded within it.
  6. EXAMPLE: http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=pdh&an=bne1202249

Gale Articles (Expanded Academic ASAP, Contemporary Authors)

  1. While on campus, go to the database and find the article you want to link. (Use an on-campus computer to insure an accurate link.)
  2. Open and view the article.
  3. At the bottom of the article you will see "Source Citation:" which includes citation information and a URL.
  4. Highlight & Copy the URL at the end of the article. Be sure you don't copy and past the <> marks that begin and end the URL
  5. Paste the URL behind the Library Proxy prefix.
  6. Save & Use the pasted URL to your web document.
  7. EXAMPLE: http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://web4.infotrac.galegroup.com/itw/infomark/755/169/86340450w4/purl=rc1_EAIM_0_A140412707&dyn=3!xrn_1_0_A140412707?sw_aep=pitt53688

Proquest

  1. While on campus, go to the database and find the article you want to link. (Use an on-campus computer to insure an accurate link.)
  2. Open and view the article. Do not view the PDF.
  3. Find the "Document URL" which is located towards the bottom of the citation, just above the abstract.
  4. Highlight and Copy the "Document URL".
  5. Paste the URL behind the Library Proxy prefix.
  6. Save & Use the pasted URL to your web document.
  7. EXAMPLE: http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=916362661&sid=3&Fmt=4&clientId=35813&RQT=309&VName=PQD

LexisNexis Databases (You can build a Search URL that others can run)

Begin with this basic URL. Question marks indicate areas where you need to add information specific to your article/search.

http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://cisweb.lexis-nexis.com/sourceselect/returnToSearch.asp?csisrc=???&srcpdn=academic&fss=Y&after=0:ALL&date=RNG&frm_rng=????&to_rng=????&T1=???+???+???

  1. Add the "csisrc" number for the journal title. To do this:
    • While on campus, find the journal title in the Sources list in LexisNexis.

    • Place the cursor at the "Search This Title" link to find the "csisrc" number in the URL.

  2. Add a date range for the search using one of these formats. Fill in MM/DD/YY or YYYY where applicable
    • date=RNG&frm_rng=YYYY&to_rng=YYYY
    • date=RNG&frm_rng=MM/DD/YY&to_rng=MM/DD/YY
  3. Add a phrase from the article title to complete the search. Each term in the phrase should be separated by a "+" sign.
EXAMPLE

Resource:

Peterson, Karla. "
Life on Mars; Kristen Bell committed to role-model role of `Veronica'",  The San Diego Union-Tribune, November 28, 2005: D1

Search URL:

http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://cisweb.lexis-nexis.com/sourceselect/returnToSearch.asp?csisrc=11811&srcpdn=academic&fss=Y&after=0:ALL&date=RNG&frm_rng= 11/28/05&to_rng=11/28/05&T1=life+on+mars

The search URL opens a pre-filled search page for the article:

and the reader can hit Search to reach the article in the search results.
