Databases that maintain persistent URLs (PURLs)
can be saved to course reading lists in Blackboard or on other web
documents. In order to create these links you need two pieces of
information (1) The library proxy URL prefix &
(2) The stable URL of the article.
- The Library Proxy URL Prefix
- This prefix must precede any web
link created to any article in the Library's paid databases.
If the proxy is not used, the link will work only on the campus
network. The Proxy Prefix is
http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=
- Stable URL of the article
- Stable URLs are not provided by
every database. Below are
instructions and examples from the databases that do allow deep
article linking. Please note that there are different ways to
determine the permanent link, depending upon the resource. If you
have trouble determining the link, contact the
Reference Team. Those databases
that allow linking in some way are
- EBSCO databases (ERIC, History
Reference Center, Professional Development Collection,
PsycArticles & SPORTDiscus)
- Gale Databases (Expanded
Academic ASAP, Contemporary Authors)
- Proquest
- LexisNexis databases (No PURL,
but you create a Search URL that students can run)
EXAMPLES
(Identify articles and URLs while on
campus to insure accurate links)
EBSCO Article Linking (ERIC, History Reference Center, Professional
Development Collection, PsycArticles & SPORTDiscus)
- While on campus, go to
the database and find the article you want to link. (Use
an on-campus computer to insure an accurate link.)
- Click on the title of the article to
view the abstract
- Do not view the PDF of the article.
- Towards the bottom of the citation
there will be a URL listed at "Persistent link to this
record"
- Highlight, Copy and Paste this link
as is. It already has the Library's Proxy Prefix
embedded within it.
- EXAMPLE:
http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=pdh&an=bne1202249

Contemporary Authors)
- While on campus,
go to the database and
find the article you want to link. (Use an on-campus
computer to insure an accurate link.)
- Open and view the article.
- At the bottom of the article you will
see "Source Citation:" which includes citation
information and a URL.
- Highlight & Copy the URL at the end
of the article. Be sure you don't copy and past the <>
marks that begin and end the URL
- Paste the URL behind the Library
Proxy prefix.
- Save & Use the pasted URL to your web
document.
- EXAMPLE:
http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://web4.infotrac.galegroup.com/itw/infomark/755/169/86340450w4/purl=rc1_EAIM_0_A140412707&dyn=3!xrn_1_0_A140412707?sw_aep=pitt53688

LexisNexis Databases (You can
build a Search URL that others can run)
Begin with this basic URL. Question marks
indicate areas where you need to add information specific to your
article/search.
http://library.keystone.edu:2048/login?url=http://cisweb.lexis-nexis.com/sourceselect/returnToSearch.asp?csisrc=???&srcpdn=academic&fss=Y&after=0:ALL&date=RNG&frm_rng=????&to_rng=????&T1=???+???+???
